January 11,2017/Just the Facts, Ma’am

Even a few young people may remember the television series DRAGNET. You know, the one with Sgt. Joe Friday who remained stoic while imploring witnesses to give, “Just the facts, Ma’am.”

I graduated with a degree in Communications/Journalism. Every time I watch a ‘beauty/scholarship’  pageant and hear someone say they are majoring in this, I scream, “Don’t DO it!” They never seem to listen, however! It is a degree that really doesn’t bring a lot of job openings unless you are very lucky….or you are willing to be underpaid. Still, it does give you insight into human situations.

One of the first lessons you learn is to use the WHO, WHAT, WHEN, WHERE, and WHY when writing a story. Face it, if you have ten people witness an accident as it unfolds, you end up with ten different observations. To get to the bottom of the actual cause/effect, you have to go through carefully and sift all those stories to (hopefully) gain enough insight so that you can have an assurance of the truth.

Sometimes, people who appear to be truthful and correct on the surface are hiding their own agenda.

John the Baptist figured that out about the Pharisees and the Sadducees and boy they didn’t like it! Matthew 3: 7-10–But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees come to his baptism, he said unto them, O generation of vipers, who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come? Bring forth therefore fruits meet for repentance. And think not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham to our father: for I say unto you, that God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham. And now also the axe is laid unto the root of the trees: therefore every tree which bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.

We have been warned…by our ‘fruits’/deeds we will be judged so we’d better make sure we are humble enough to admit to wrongdoings and ask for forgiveness. Don’t think because we ‘seem’ to be on the level that we won’t be caught out.

Getting at the real truth of things is often difficult nowdays. We have far too many people basing accusations on lies and mistruths. Before we jump on any bandwagon of innuendo from any source, it would be smart to remember Joe Friday and get JUST THE FACTS. From there, we may have the chance to uncover the true story…but our first and foremost allegiance should always be to God who IS truth.
