January 8,2017/Have You Noticed?

It happens over and over…yet few seem to notice or care.

I have an experiment you should try. Turn on your television from eight pm until whenever. Now, watch whatever you like–regular channels, cable channels, whatever programs you enjoy but make a mark on a paper every time someone says, Jesus Christ.

Tally up your marks.

Now, let’s look at today’s reading. Exodus 20:7 —You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, for the Lord will not hold him guiltless who takes His name in vain.

Our society has become immune to Christian teaching. Can you imagine if we substituted another religion’s esteemed figure? Can you imagine if we substitued PLACE NAME HERE OTHER RELIGIOUS LEADERS?

Yet, we as Christians turn aside and allow people to use the name of our LORD as a swear word. Do we complain? Do we march? Do we stop friends, family, or acquaintances from doing this in our presence? Do we throw away books, papers, magazines that think nothing of using such an insult? Do we sometimes even fall into the practice of doing it ourselves?

This is our Lord and God of whom we speak. We should give Him the honor  and respect that He deserves. We Must capitalize His name when we write. We MUST stand up for Him.

Now, I am not advocating anger…only a gentle reminder that although others may not see this as an issue it is an insult to us.

Be careful in your speech. Be respectful. You can return books where this offends you and state the reason why. You can call, e-mail, or write letters to television programs and stations that do this as a matter of course.

Most of all, YOU can make an effort to remember that our God is worthy of the most honor we can afford to give Him. Capitalize His name. Use His name properly. Watch how you speak.

We are responsible for changing this. It begins with us.
