You see it every time you watch television for more than an hour or so…..those constant charity ads.
Watching these ads and many more like them tear at your heartstrings. For only $.XX amount you can help.
You are forced to watch dying babies; starving, mistreated animals; children with medicial conditions so dire that you whisper a prayer for them, and another for your own who have been blessed with good health.
In the beginning, you may send a one-time gift…or even a monthly donation.
But it is never enough.
It will never BE enough…until finally you begin to tune it all out. You leave and go do something else–get a snack, go to the bathroom, peek at your phone, or turn off the sound.
You have become INDIFFERENT.
Indifferent to the words, the plight, the pleas of the suffering.
Jesus warned us of indifference in our attitude toward hearing the preaching of His word. Luke 10:13-16-Woe unto thee, Chorazin! Woe unto thee, Bethsaida! For if the mighty works had been done in Tyre and Sidon, which have been done in you, they had a great while ago repented, sitting in sackcloth and ashes. But it shall be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon at the judgment than for you. And thou, Capernaum, which art exalted to heaven, shalt be thrust down to hell. He that heareth you heareth me; and he that despiseth you despiseth me; and he that despiseth me despiseth him that sent me.
John the Baptist had announced that the kingdom of heaven was at hand. The places chosen for the testing of the nation of Israel such as Chorazin and Bethsaida had rejected both John’s testimony and the testimony of Jesus. Tyre and Sidon were heathen cities denounced by the Old Testament prophets.
See how the leaders and people therein had become indifferent to God’s messengers and His word. People, even religious leaders were numb to such teachings–whether from ignorance or desire. They had become wrapped up in themselves, their stature in the community, their law.
No rocking the boat.
How much easier to ignore Him and be indifferent.
Jesus, however, is giving his disciples clear warning as they go off to tell others about Him. They will hear you; they will despise you…and those that do not only despise ME, they despise God who has sent Me.
It is impossible to help everyone who asks for our aid, no matter how much wealth or good intentions we may have. Yet, we are to be on our guard not to become indifferent or allow ourselves to be numb to the condition of others.
Many are suffering physically, mentally, and spiritually.
It is our job to be the light. To share the healing power of our Lord with love and compassion and always to be aware that we guard against indifference…
