Some of you may not believe that there was a world around BEFORE the internet, but there was! Young people today grew up hearing, “You’ve got mail!” That wasn’t true for me, nor was it true for Jesus. Sending word about important matters took time. People had to travel great distances in order to inform others about births, deaths, and important matters. They had to write out what they wanted to say and have those messages delivered by others. Important information such as God’s laws would have been memorized and handed down from generation to generation before then being copied onto scrolls or etched in some manner onto tablets or stones.
When we went to Ireland we were lucky enough to have been told to go see the Moone Cross in County Kildare which is south of Dublin. Unlike many other High Crosses in Ireland, this one is out by itself in a ruin. In fact, when we drove up my husband thought we were in the wrong place as there were cows roaming around, birds singing, and NO TOURISTS!!
That made our visit even better. No postcards. No sales booths. No admission fee. Just a standing cross carved many years ago that was used to illustrate Biblical stories. Climbing over the stone gate, we saw the cross standing in the ruin of an old church with a simple sign that explained the different stories represented by the carvings. One could imagine an earlier time when people would gather around to listen to these stories and think about those who spent their time carving in order to ensure that the importance of these matters would continue to be told and illustrated for each generation!
Jesus had a special message for us that still resounds today. Matthew 11:28-30-Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.
Unlike the ‘heavy’ burden of keeping all the Old Testament law, Jesus has come to fufill those laws and grant us a new message. His message is one that offers us one of acceptance into His kingdom. He will wear the burdensome yoke of the scourge of punishment and rejection and give us the rest for our souls upon those of us who acknowledge our need.
His message is simple, eternal, and freely offered. YOU HAVE MAIL from the Savior of the world. All you need to do is ‘pick it up!’
